At move 45, it is white to play in this go position:
I am in utter confusion about what to play…. I vacillate between the ROSE method for move selection and the Clossi Approach. So let’s use both.
ROSE Method
A 4-dan professional developed the Rose Method, let’s apply it.
- Do I need to respond to my opponent’s last move? No. the last move was not sente against me in any way.
- Would it be a good idea to respond even if I dont have to? Not really, because the move did not put pressure on me and I dont want to have knee-jerk reaction to Black entering my moyo.
- What are my options? Here we look all over the board for moves and a good move for the opponent is a good move for me… if I were Black I would play a 2-space extension from K3 to M3 or G3…. G3 puts pressure on my high E4 stone. I could pay K5 and cap Black but why would I do that? It turns out that G3 or H3 are good moves according to AI.
Clossi Approach
The Clossi approach was developed by an amateur 2-dan and is the best way to approach go from 30k to 8k in my opinion. I started using the ROSE method around 7k because I found I was playing too defensively and losing the initiative too much with the Clossi approach. But that is just me: there is a 4k who uses the Clossi approach and Clossi himself beat me using the Clossi approach. But let’s go ahead work through the Clossi approach:
- Am I OK? Hmm.. I’m not sure about the upper left. Plus I want to cut Black’s wall at F16, but I need to reduce the liberties of that wall to prevent a net…. WAIT A MINUTE… what happed to asking if I am OK? Why am I digressing to a random attack of his wall? OK, well, let’s look at the lower left… I am not settled. E6 looks nice. Or maybe g3/h3 to push Black into my wall?… but I am OK… or am I?
- is my opponent OK? R17 is open in the upper right.. the spacing on the right side means I can attack his Q8 group… if I play K19, and then cut at F16, he will have a group with 3 liberties that I may be able to kill? Hmm, I guess I’ll play that.
Any other method?
What methodology would you use to choose a move in this position? What would be your thought process?
